The Monday Gossip

The holy trinity of rumour mongers, the Daily Star, Daily Express and Metro, have all picked up on speculation from Spain that Real Madrid could attempt to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois this summer.

All three newspapers talk of a 'shock bid' - would it really be that surprising for one of the world's leading clubs to bid for one of the world's leading goalkeepers? - and it is claimed that Real could offer Raphael Varane to tempt Jose Mourinho into a deal he would otherwise surely rule out.

The speculation may well have arisen on the back of the agent of David De Gea, also widely linked with a move to the Bernabeu, revealing talks have begun over a new Manchester United contract for the Spaniard.

The 24-year-old's current deal expires at the end of the season, but Jorge Mendes has suggested an extension is likely.

"It is not true that De Gea has found a deal with Real Madrid," Mendes said. "I'm negotiating with Manchester United his extension."

"We're holding talks and at this moment it seems he could continue with United, but we haven't signed anything yet."
